Watering Methods
Watering Hose
Rain Collection tanks
water irrigation system
garden hose
A garden hose is probably the most common form of watering medium for the garden. A garden hose could work for the garden as long as its within close proximity to the garden patch. If not, you may have to carry water to the garden and this ould quickly become an exhausting chore.
Rain Colection tank
If you have the space and ability to do so, a rain collecion tank works great! You can build the tanks close by to the garden and use a hose to gravity feed outwards to be able to water the garden. This not only saves money on the water bill and/or wear and tear on a well pump, it also allows the garden to have nutritional rain water watered on your garden.
Water Irrigation System
This method takes some time and investment for your garden but is the most effecient and time saving method. Irrigation in the garden allows the plant roots to be well saturated and keeps water off the leaves of the plants. Keeping water off the leaves helps prevent rot and sun scaled on tender leaves.
Watering tips
- Watering in the morning or late afternoon is best. Morning time will allow the water to soak in before it evaporates from heat and wind, allows the leaves time to dry out if they get splashed, and plants will have the moisture to draw from during the heat of the day. Late afternoon is also best as long as the leaves will dry out before night time. It's best to avoid watering in the heat of the day because water will evaporate much faster and any overspray on the leaves can cause them to burn.
- Fruits and vegetables need consistent water to produce well. Don't let them go completely dry before watering them again because this can cause problems like blossom end rot or cracked tomatoes.
- Brown leaf edges and/or yellow leaves can signal over-watering. Make sure you're checking before adding more.
- Give your plants a nice deep watering. Soaking allows the plant to absorb the water. a quick spalsh of water will be ineffective and dry up before the plant can benefit from the water.
- Water at the base of the plant with a watering wand, long-neck watering can, soaker hose, or drip system. Avoid getting the leaves, fruits, or vegetables wet to help prevent diseases that thrive on moisture, like powdery mildew or sunburn.
